The exam is built from situations you meet on the job, not from small talk. You might be asked to work through:

  • a go-around in gusting wind
  • a medical emergency on board
  • a runway incursion
  • a drone where it should not be

Your examiner knows standard phraseology and knows the moment it runs out and plain English has to carry the exchange. That moment is what we rate.

Descriptors

Pronunciation

Stress, rhythm and intonation. An accent is fine. At Level 4 it may show, but it only sometimes gets in the way of being understood.

Structure

Grammar and sentence patterns. Basic structures are used with control, and errors rarely change the meaning of what you say.

Vocabulary

Range and accuracy on work-related topics, and the ability to paraphrase when the exact word does not come.

Fluency

Speaking in stretches at a workable tempo, without fillers or pauses that would distract a listener on the frequency.

Comprehension

Understanding work-related speech accurately, including when the situation turns unexpected or the accent is unfamiliar.

Interactions

Replies that are immediate and to the point, and the habit of checking, confirming and clarifying when something is unclear.
